Maine, Day 2. Deer Isle

We traveled by rental car to Deer Isle, a small town SW of Bar Harbor.  We stayed at the historic Pilgrim’s Inn, built in 1793.

Our room was very nice.

This whale-themed weather vane caught my eye

I thought this scene represented well the spirit of Deer Isle and Pilgrim’s Inn. Contemplative; quiet.

Maine

June 24, 2014

Our flights from Tallahassee to Portland, with the inevitable change of planes in Atlanta, were without incident, the best kind. Unless you consider having two King Charles Spaniels across the aisle from you in flight as an incident.

Here’s a look at one of Casco Bay’s many lighthouses from the air.

Later, we attended a minor league baseball game between the hometown Sea Dogs and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve

The Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve is in a rural area of South Georgia.  It is one of the largest stands of the flowers in North America, all the more remarkable because it’s 200 or 300 miles south of the plant’s normal range.  I had the good fortune to be part of a small group on a guided hike through the preserve last week when the flowers were at their peak.

Key West, Day 4–The Final Word

We spent most of our last day riding on the Old Towne Trolley, seeing the sights and listening to stories of life on the island, past and present.  There were not a lot of great photo opportunities, but we did stop at one of America’s great ice cream parlors and sampled the offerings.  Later, we made our way to the dock and boarded the Express for our return to Ft. Myers.

Key West Day 3–December 25, 2013

After gift exchange and brunch at the hotel, we ventured back to Duval Street.  There are many interesting things to be seen, including transportation.
